Sweet deal for West County as nursery donates stone fruit trees

A new delivery of 620 fruit trees, donated by the Dave Wilson Nursery, was brought to West Contra Costa on Thursday for distribution at the Nevin Community Center in Richmond and the Shields-Reid Community Center on Kelsey in North Richmond.

The bare-root trees -- varieties of pluot, peach, nectarine, cherry and apricot -- were delivered by Tony Wolcott, urban forester for Albany, who volunteered his services for El Cerrito-based group Self-Sustaining Communities (www.self-sustainingcommunities.org).

Donations arranged by Self-Sustaining Communities have meant the delivery of more than 5,300 fruit-bearing trees to the area since November 2009, with most directed to impoverished areas.
